On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., as part of the pre-convention activities of the AIE congress (XLIX – Congress of the Italian Association of Epidemiology 2025 | AIE – Italian Association of Epidemiology), the Grand Hotel Salerno will host the event “Italian GBD Initiative: analysis, contributions and hybridizations within the Global Burden of Disease Project.” The meeting will bring together Italian experts to discuss the latest Global Burden of Disease (GBD) estimates and their impact on national and regional public health.
An opportunity to learn more about GBD 2023 estimates.
Opening the event will be Lorenzo Monasta, who will explain the work of the Italian GBD Initiative and the new GBD 2023 estimates. This will be followed by a talk by Giuseppe Grosso, who will analyze the burden of disease in Italy attributable to nutritional risk factors, an issue of growing importance for preventive health care.
Focus on antimicrobial resistance, diabetes, and dementia risk
The session will continue with Giulia Zamagni, who will present an analysis of MICROBE 2021 estimates of antimicrobial resistance in Italy and Western Europe. After an initial discussion session, Cristiana Abbafati will explore the link between social equity and dementia risk in the European Union, using a machine learning approach based on GBD 2021 data.
Luciano Nieddu will present a survival analysis for assessing the risk of worsening in patients with diabetes mellitus and neuropathy sequelae, while Giulia Carreras and Michela Baccini will present the results of the ACAB study on lung cancer, smoking, and pollution in Tuscany.
Innovative approaches to health care planning
The last part of the meeting will be devoted to topics of great relevance to public health and health planning. Stefano Giannoni will provide a comprehensive overview of frontotemporal dementia through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Angela Andreella will discuss the integration of health surveillance data and GBD estimates to analyze comorbidity in Italy.
Concluding the event will be Daniela Fortuna, who will illustrate how GBD metrics can be used to monitor health needs and plan care for chronic patients in Emilia-Romagna’s health care companies and districts.
